Snoopy & Charlie Brown
The Apollo 10 Lunar Module (LM) was named “Snoopy” since the mission was not going to land on the Moon but they were going to ‘snoop around.’ The Command/Service Module (CSM) was called “Charlie Brown.” Both are characters from the comic strip Peanuts.
Pete Conrad’s Bet
Apollo 12 Commander Charles (Pete) Conrad (3rd person to walk on the Moon) had a $500 bet with a reporter that NASA did not tell him what to say when he got to the Moon. People probably thought Neil Armstrong’s famous words ("That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind") were scripted (they were not). So to prove his point Pete’s first words were, “Whoopie! Man, that may have been a small one for Neil, but that's a long one for me.“ Yes, that is what he said…on the Moon!
